Depending on the result of the examination, your dentist may recommend a wisdom tooth extraction. Not all wisdom teeth may have to be extracted, though. One factor dentists look into is the type of impaction.
One possibility is that the tooth has gotten past the jawbone but gum may be covering a portion of its crown. This can cause food to get trapped below the gum and lead to tooth decay. On the other hand, a portion of the crown may not have penetrated through the bone and the gum. In other cases, the wisdom tooth may have been trapped on the jawbone and couldn’t erupt. This scenario would require a more complex procedure.
