When the root of your tooth gets damaged or infected, the solution isn’t always to extract the affected tooth. A root canal therapy can be conducted to save the damaged tooth.
Each tooth contains a root canal system. This system is home to a long, thin strand called a dental pulp. Dental pulp extends down to the root of the tooth and is responsible in providing nutrients and nerves to the tooth. When the dental pulp gets injured, the nerves of the tooth get damaged as well. When not treated, this can lead to the death of the tooth as well.
The root canal therapy, also referred to as endodontic treatment, removes injured, infected, or dead dental pulp. During this procedure, your dentist creates an opening into the tooth’s crown to the pulp chamber. The affected pulp is then treated or removed. Afterward, the opening is permanently sealed to keep the root canal protected from infection.
